Oil and gas producers face losing their social license to operate because of their contribution to global warming and are under pressure by activists, politicians, and ESG investors to stop developing new oil and gas assets. This pressure, and resulting underinvestment, could however have unintended consequences that undermine the goals of the ESG movement.
